Innovative cityport Antwerp
In the past five decades, port cities largely lost their port activities and maritime identity. The concept of the port city faded away because policy makers and urban economists were convinced that we had arrived in a post-industrial era where port and city had little to do with each other. In 1988, Hoyle published his famous scheme on the evolution of the city-port interface. The outlook was bleak: permanent increases in scale were pushing industrial ports further and further away from the city, bringing activity to a halt in once vibrant port neighborhoods near city centers.
